Hinged Insect Screen
A framed screen for windows and doors that swings open on hinges, like a door.
How it works
The mesh is stretched in the frame, which is fixed to the surround with hinges and opens and closes like a door. The catch that holds it shut is chosen per project. It is fitted to open the opposite way to the window or door, so it needs clear space as wide as the frame.

Is a hinged screen right for your opening?
Three questions show which hinged screen fits, or whether the pleated model is the better choice.
Question 1Is there clear space as wide as the frame on the side where the screen would open?
If there are pets at home, the mesh type is chosen together at the site visit. A screen does not prevent falls.
Check the swing space
A hinged screen opens the opposite way to the window or door. Since most windows open inwards, the screen usually opens outwards and needs clear space as wide as the frame.

Exact dimensions and the opening direction are set on site during the visit.
- Swing radius: equal to frame width
- Wider openings: consider a pleated screen
- Check before measuring
- Shutter, roller grille or awning guides outside
- Railing or French balcony bar
- How far the handle projects
- The wall or post the open frame rests against

Frequently asked questions about hinged insect screens
Fine mesh stops mosquitoes and house flies. Where tiny midges or sandflies are common, a tighter weave and edge sealing can be considered; however, smaller pores reduce airflow slightly and need cleaning more often.
No. An insect screen is designed only to keep insects out and will not hold the weight of a child or a pet. Standard mesh is not cat-claw resistant either. For window safety, use separate measures such as child safety locks or opening restrictors.
A vacuum with a soft brush or a damp cloth is enough. Clean a pleated screen in place, wiping along the folds. On most hinged screens the frame lifts off its hinges and can be rinsed with water. Do not use pressure washers, stiff brushes or solvents.
An insect screen is not built to withstand storms. Fold a pleated screen into its side profile in strong wind and during the months you do not use it. Keep a hinged screen closed, or lift it off and store it over winter.
Width and height of the opening, the system, the number of panels, the profile colour and the fixing surface all affect the price. Pleated systems usually cost more than hinged ones because of the folding mesh and tension cords. The final price is based on measurements taken on site.
