Pleated Insect Screen
A screen with concertina-folded mesh and a slim profile that works on doors, windows and glazed balconies without taking up room.
How it works
The mesh folds like a concertina between slim profiles. Pull the handle bar and the mesh opens along the track to close the opening; push it back and it gathers into the side profile. Tension cords running through the mesh keep it flat, and with no spring it stays wherever you leave it instead of snapping back. Because nothing swings on hinges, no clear space is needed in front of or behind it.
How to use it
Take the handle bar
The mesh sits folded inside the side profile. Take hold of the vertical handle bar.
Draw it across
The mesh unfolds along the track. Tension cords running through it keep it flat.
Let go, it stays
With no spring inside, the mesh stays where you leave it and does not snap back.
Close against the jamb
The handle bar seats into the opposite profile, leaving no gap at the edge.
Fold it away when not in use
Push the mesh back into the side profile. Keep it this way on windy days and over winter.
Inside a pleated screen
- 1Side profileThe folded mesh is stored here; when retracted, only a slim profile shows.
- 2Pleated meshMesh that folds like a concertina and lets air and light through.
- 3Tension cordsThey run through the mesh, keep it flat and reduce flapping in the wind.
- 4Handle barThe moving handle bar you pull; when closed it seats into the opposite profile.
- 5Floor trackLow floor track; nothing to trip on when passing.

Frequently asked questions about pleated insect screens
Yes. Because the pleated screen slides sideways in a slim track, it does not interfere with the glass panels as they open and stack. The track position and fixing surface are set during the site visit, based on the balcony glazing profile.
Fine mesh stops mosquitoes and house flies. Where tiny midges or sandflies are common, a tighter weave and edge sealing can be considered; however, smaller pores reduce airflow slightly and need cleaning more often.
An insect screen is not built to withstand storms. Fold a pleated screen into its side profile in strong wind and during the months you do not use it. Keep a hinged screen closed, or lift it off and store it over winter.
A vacuum with a soft brush or a damp cloth is enough. Clean a pleated screen in place, wiping along the folds. On most hinged screens the frame lifts off its hinges and can be rinsed with water. Do not use pressure washers, stiff brushes or solvents.
Width and height of the opening, the system, the number of panels, the profile colour and the fixing surface all affect the price. Pleated systems usually cost more than hinged ones because of the folding mesh and tension cords. The final price is based on measurements taken on site.
