Frequently asked questions about door systems
Look at how many people use the entrance each day. In a busy shop, clinic or hotel, an automatic door makes passage easier and limits heating and cooling losses. For a home, an office or a quieter shop, a manually opened aluminium door is usually enough and needs no power.
It depends on whether the system has a backup battery and on the type of lock. Battery-backed systems usually open or close the door fully once. Without a battery the door stops where it is; if it is not locked, the leaves can be pushed open by hand. We agree the right setting for your building during the site survey.
Not every automatic door is allowed on an escape route. Fire regulations generally require escape doors to open by hand in the direction of escape, so a standard sliding door is paired with an outward-opening door, or a break-out system is used whose leaves swing open when pushed. Your building's fire safety plan decides which applies.
Direction-sensing radar detects only people walking towards the door and ignores those passing parallel on the pavement or walking away. In winter, partial-opening mode opens the leaves just wide enough for one person. These settings are made during installation to suit the entrance.
The opening size, number of leaves, glass or panel type, frame colour and level of insulation set the price. For an automatic door the drive, sensors, battery and lock are added; for an aluminium door, hardware such as the lock and door closer. The final price is based on measurements taken on site.
Tell us the type of entrance, its approximate size and what you need from the door. Our team books an appointment to measure on site; for an automatic door we also check the mounting area above the opening and the power supply. The quote is based on these measurements.
Automatic doors count as powered equipment, so a professional service at least once a year is recommended, more often at busy entrances. Day to day, keep the track and floor guide clean and do not block the sensors. An aluminium door only needs an occasional check of hinges, lock and seals, and a wipe with a damp cloth.
It depends on the profile. For exterior entrances, thermally broken systems, where an insulating strip separates the inner and outer profile, are used with double glazing; this reduces heat loss and condensation on the inside. Non-insulated profiles suit interiors and unheated spaces. A door's insulation depends on its frame and seals, not only on the glass.
