Zip Screen
A motorised external screen whose fabric runs in zipped side rails, operated by remote control.
How it works
The fabric is rolled up in a cassette at the top and lowered by a motor; a weighted bottom bar keeps it taut on the way down. A zip along each edge locks into a channel in the side rails, so the fabric runs steadily and keeps its shape even in the wind. You lower and raise it with one button on the remote.

The difference is in the rails
On an ordinary exterior roller blind the fabric edges hang free; they flap in the wind and let light through at the sides. On a zip screen the edges are locked into the rails along their full height.

- 1CassetteHouses and protects the fabric, roller tube and motor.
- 2MotorSits inside the roller tube; the screen goes up and down by remote.
- 3Zip edgeA zip strip welded to both fabric edges runs in the rail channel.
- 4Side railHolds the fabric full height and cuts light and insects at the edges.
- 5Weighted bottom barKeeps the fabric taut as it lowers.
Which openness factor?
The share of micro-perforations in the screen fabric decides how much of the view you keep by day and how much of the room shows from outside at night. The openness factors available are shown with the fabric sample book at the site survey.
By day the outside is brighter, so at every openness you see out but not in. Dark fabrics give a clearer view and better glare control.
Day: clearest outside view. Night: with lights on, the room can be seen from outside.

System options
The zip screen is motor-driven and operated with one button on the remote. One button lowers, stops or raises it; leave it at any height. Rain and wind sensor options are assessed per project at the site survey. Key options tailored to your project:

Frequently asked questions about zip screens
The edges of the fabric are locked into a zipped channel inside the side rails, so the screen does not flap and keeps its shape in the wind. Its resistance is not unlimited: in Europe it is stated as a wind class under EN 13561, and the class drops as the screen gets larger. Retract the screen in strong wind. Rain and wind sensor options are assessed per project at the site survey. If the fabric gets wet, let it dry lowered before rolling it up; this extends its life.
Zip screens mostly use micro-perforated screen fabric, defined by its openness factor; common values range from 1% to 10%. By day it is brighter outside, so you see the view from inside while people outside cannot see in. At night, with the lights on indoors, this reverses: at 10% openness the interior can be made out, at 3% and 1% it stays largely hidden. For full darkness, choose a blackout fabric.
External systems usually reduce heat gain more, because they stop the sun before it reaches the glass. Internal blinds meet the sunlight after it has passed through the glass; they are effective for controlling light, glare and privacy. On hot elevations the two can be combined.
Alterations to the exterior of an apartment building may require approval from building management or co-owners; we review this together at the site survey.
The system chosen, overall size, fabric or slat type, colour, motorised or manual operation and the mounting surface all affect the price. The final quote is based on measurements taken on site.
