Retractable Pergola
A pergola whose cover glides along rails: shade when you want it, open sky when you don't.
How it works
The cover is attached to aluminium crossbars that run between rails on both sides and moves back and forth along them. Extended, it is pulled taut and closes the roof; retracted, it folds up at one end and opens the space to the sky. The rails are set at a slight slope so rain runs to the front gutter. You can use the same area in shade at noon and in the open in the evening.
How the cover retracts
The cover is attached to crossbars that slide in the side rails. As the front bar moves back, the cover folds like an accordion.
Closed
The cover is taut and the roof closed. Rain runs down the slope into the front gutter.
Retracting
As the cover retracts, the front bar moves back; the crossbars close up and the cover folds.
Part-way
In an intermediate position, part of the roof is open and part stays in shade.
Open
The cover sits as a folded stack at one end; the rest of the roof is open.
What sizes are possible?
Two things set the size: how far the cover travels along the rails, and how many modules sit side by side.
Exact sizes are taken during the site survey.
- Projection (depth): set per project; the exact size is confirmed at the site surveyThe distance from the wall to the front posts; the cover travels along it.
- Width: extended by coupling modulesOn wide façades several modules are installed side by side; each module is planned separately.
- Height: to suit the buildingPost height follows the top of the doors and windows and the rail slope. Outward-opening doors must clear the cover.
System options
Side enclosure and colour options are set per project at the site survey. Control and sensor options are determined for each project at the site survey.

Frequently asked questions about the retractable pergola
A pergola usually has a fabric or membrane cover; on retractable models it folds back. A bioclimatic roof uses aluminium louvres that rotate on their own axis; when they are tilted open, you keep the shade while warm air escapes upwards. A pergola is the lighter structure; a louvered roof behaves more like a rigid roof.
That depends on the cover and the slope. The cover type is chosen per project. With the right slope, water runs into the gutter and is drained from there; with too little, it can pool on the cover. Moisture on the underside in cold weather is usually condensation, not a leak.
On a retractable pergola, wind load is highest with the cover extended, so retract it before a storm. Once retracted, only the aluminium frame carries the load. Covered pergola systems are not designed to carry snow: retract the cover before snowfall and never force it when frozen. Rain and wind sensor options are assessed per project at the site survey. We look at the wind conditions at your site during the survey.
Width and projection, the model, wall-mounted or freestanding installation, the number of posts, cover and frame colour, profile bending on the curved model, and site conditions. The exact price is based on measurements taken on site.
Clear leaves and dust from the gutters and drain outlets, especially in autumn. Wipe aluminium surfaces with warm water and a soft cloth. On a retractable pergola, don't leave a wet cover folded for long; letting it dry extended reduces the risk of mould.
